This is mainly watercolor, but I used some acrylic in the

dress and background and some watercolor pencil for details.

She will be a gift for a friend once it's finished.

Sweet Angel

I have been busy, busy. Unfortunately, there hasn't been time to paint. There is time to sketch on many days. Early mornings are best if I can capture the time. It's already 10:34 and I have been up since 6:30! I just got to scan some recent sketches that I am pleased with. I want to paint a gift for a good friend who is retiring soon. She likes angels, so I hope to paint this "Sweet Angel" for her.

Round Design Pattern

Round Design Pattern is something I dreamed up because I love circular design. It could use some texture and color.

This "Little Witch" is inspired by an antique card that I found in a box at Barnes and Noble in October. I wanted to create my own version of this.

In Paint Works Magazine, October, 2011, there are always some inspiring designs to produce in painted media. This is my version of Robin Mani's "Pumpkin Swirls Plate". I liked this idea so much, that I went on to paint the design in several combined media

WIP Gingerbread House

Here is my latest work in progress.

I love the gingerbread cottages at the camground on Martha's Vinyard. They are so charming.

I would love to paint a series of pictures representing the little village tucked behind Oak's Bluffs marina.

It's so calm, peaceful and charming.

Here is my first attempt - done in acrylics. Painting the details is taking longer than I imagined.

I sure hope I get better and quicker at this.

Anyhow, I'll keep working on this one and post my progress.

I love the way these setches came out. I'm keeping a little visual journal and adding pictures to the notes and messages that I write.

It's fun to see what develops as I go. Not everything scans like the original, especially when painted.

Some of you may think that I have abandoned my blogging! Trust me, I know I haven't posted anything in a long time. It is not intentional. I have been reading posts faithfully. More Importantly, I try to sketch and paint something every day. Life keeps interrupting and keeping me busy. I love my aart and I love all of your beautiful work.

I now have a new scanner that I'm getting comfortable using. So soon, I'll post some of my efforts - promise!

I'm relieved that they are complete,

but I have some more to work on.

I called this one Blanket of Dreams

This is called Chickies.

This one I called Dragonflies.

Somehow they don't look quite the same when they're scanned.

Details that I labored over barely show while other components stand out changing the way that features appear.

An Inspiration!

This is what I've been doing lately. I actually have three colored pencil concept drawings completed, but for some reason, they wouldn't upload. I might try to darken them a bit and try again. They are a little pale. I want to paint these babies and reproduce them for sale in a gift shop. I just haven't decided how big they should be. I'm also thinking of making copies and use them as collage. Any thoughts or suggestions are much appreciated. I just hope I can show you the other two sketches.

Butterfly Party

I decided to dabble in a little watercolor this weekend. It ws fun to go back to something light and delicate. I was able to get nice results even though they are not as vibrant as the acryllics. I didn't want to overdo the details in this painting. I have a couple more ideas to try using butterflies.
On another note, still about butterflies, Trudi Sissons at Two Dresses Studio is collecting artful butterflies for the Holocaust Museum in Houston Texas. I'm placing a button on my sidebar with a link to her page, if you're interested in participating.
Briefly, the Holocaust Museum is collecting 1.5 million handmade butterflies to remember the 1,500,000 children who perished as a result of the Holocaust. Consider participating in this beautiful memorial that will be displayed in the Spring, 2013. The Poem, I Never Saw Another Butterfly, written by Pavel Friedman on June 4, 1942 is the inspiration for this project. You can find the poem on Trudi's blog. The deadline for entries is December 31, 2011.

The View

A while ago, I was asked to create a painting for my sister-in-law's guest room.

For a while I put the idea on a back burner. I just couldn't come up with a suitable idea.

Fortunately, she was still interested, so I decided to paint something with a window/door view of the beach.

I find the process of finding the right subject so challenging, sometimes.

I'm not sure why I get stuck.

I am happy with this so far. I think it needs a little more work, but I wanted to show my work in progress.

The image at the top is an earlier version of the work. I decided that the interior of the cottage needed some more detail, so I added the wreath, rug and tote bag.

Clementines, Pickup Trucks , Little Boys and Other Things

I really wasn't going to wait so long to post another entry, but, time does zoom along. I created this little sketch earlier this week and really liked the look of it. I have started to create an acrylic painting which is on my worktable now.

I liked the sketch so much, that I decided to add an outline using my #1 Micron Pen. I might just paint it again using watercolor...Hmm, I'll have to give that a try.

I have finally painted "Zippy" the old pickup truck. I was going to make it into a valentine for my Grandson, Casey. I have not decided about it yet. He was flipping through my sketchbook one day. He counted how many of the drawings were of girls and how many were boys. He liked some of the female pictures, but he wanted to know if I could draw more boys. I'll have to work on that, certainly.

He didn't see it, but I did one of him while I was on vacation cruising in the Bahamas.

I read with interest what goes on in some of my favorite creative/artist-blogger's posts. Some seem so productive and successful.

Kelly Rae wrote a very provocative article about celebrating yourself and the skills that you possess "The Secret Ingredient is You". She was upset because another artist had used some examples of work that looked strikingly similar to her work. In addition, someone else had posted information on a blog using Kelly Rae's exact words. This is distressing, mainly because it seems like many creatives are trying to get to the same place - publication, national recognition, or licensed at the same time. It's distressing because CREATIVITY should NOT be a competition... Hello! Creativity and the work around it comes from within. If an artist produces work worthy of note, other creatives should acknowledge that person and produce original work as their own examples.

Another inspirational artist who's work I read and admire is Leah author of Creative Every Day. Each month Leah posts a theme and produces some examples of her work in the topic. This month the theme has been Cosmos - a beautiful, broad and exciting topic. If a creative person is looking for ideas, Leah is a great resource.

I guess I had better go back to painting.

More Sketches

I just love getting new ideas! This morning I did this little sketch using a picture I found in an advertisement. When I woke up, I decided to try this. I love old trucks and cars. They have so much character. I can see that this drawing needs some work because the running board is too low to the ground...teehee. It would get scraped by every rock and stone. Well, it's just a sketch so no harm done.

When I paint it, I'll fix things.

Here's another view of Zippy (that's the name I gave the little truck).

This version obviously has a better suspension! :) Now I can paint and not worry about scraping the undercarriage.

Have you noticed today's date? it's 1/01/11 - really cool! The number one by itself signifies new beginnings, independence and decisions. My personal word for the new year is awareness, so I feel compelled to be aware of my surroundings, signs and events. I was drawn to understand the significance of today's date.

I hope the new year begins blissfully for everyone who reads this. Expect the best for yourself and your loved ones.

Something New

Before Christmas, I started to experiment with Golden Fluid Acrylics. I even bought some Glass Bead Gel.

I want to produce a painting for my kitchen. Something with reflective quality. I am trying the Glass Bead Gel in several different

paintings to produce a luminescent effect. The acrylic painting of the tree is one of my explorations.

Another way to pass my time is to sketch whenever I can. Things get so busy, it's sometimes challenging to find time to paint, but I do enjoy sketching out ideas and inspirations. The first one I have included here is a picture of my daughter and her love. They took a picture at a recent Patriot's football game. I think the resemblance for Anthony is pretty accurate, but my daughter Juli's is not quite right. I'll have to work on this some more.

My second piece was inspired while I was reading The Bells a novel by Richard Harvell. I found the descriptions in this work vivid and spent a lot of time visualizing the action while I read. In this scene, Moses has met Amelia out in the city, but he does not want her to see him. He brought a piece of red silk to cover her eyes. Amelia insisted on exploring his face with her hands.

The third sketch is one I did earlier this fall. I wanted to capture my grandson looking at the stars at night. There's a rocket in the picture because I thought he might imagine himself riding up to explore the stars.

Good News and Adjustments

I am so thrilled to announce that I won Jill Badonsky's new Muse book at her Awemanac web page. I am so thrilled! This page is full of fun and inspiration. Us artsy types need fuel for our creative juices to flow. Jill provides inspiration in many fun ways. I can't wait to see her book and begin drinking in the magic!
Another happy gift came before I went away. Sue Rundle-Hughes awarded my blog the Lovely Blog Award. That was such a sweet surprise. I'll have to figure out when I can pay it forward. Thank you Sue.

Sometimes it's challenging to share my creativity. I have been away for a couple of weeks in Florida. Just before I left, my computer failed. My daughter very kindly brought it to Best Buy for service because it's under warranty. They shipped it to their service agent and it's still not fixed. Until I get it back I can't scan the sketches I've done and I haven't had a chance to paint.

Healing Energy A Revision

Finally, I have made some satisfactory changes to my healing angel. Now her face is more a 3/4 view.
Since I'm heading to Florida for two weeks, I won't be able to do any work on her until mid November. This might be a good way to see the work with fresh eyes.
My husband and I are going to visit some friends this week and then meet family on Friday. On Saturday we'll all embark on a 7 day Disney cruise to St. Maarten & St. Thomas. If this cruise is anything like the last one 2 years ago, if will be wonderful.
It will be nice to be in the warm sunshine for a while. I really miss the beautiful summer we had this year. It is tough to have shorter days of sunlight during the winter. So
Sometimes I feel like I should carry a lantern to brighten the darkness. Maybe this will be another painting...

Spooky

My illustration of a Wicked little Witch is nearly finished.

The trunk contents need to be stronger or darker.

This is done in clolored pencil instead of acrylic paint. I wanted to control the details

of my lady's face, fingers and toes :) , so she's not as bright and bold.

I'll be back when I have made things brighter.

I had planned this painting just as Leah at Creative Every Day had announced her theme for the month of October.
It's exciting to see how a painting progresses. I like to view it with "different eyes" so I wait a few hours or even overnight. Viewing it on my blog helps too.
Sometimes I can't tell if I'm missing something as I work on a piece. I wonder if that improves with experience. Hmmm....
There's more to do here, so I'll work some more and then post again, soon.

Another idea that I have been working on lately, is a children's story.

A friend of mine who works at the elementary school wrote a note about a conversation she had with a little girl in kindergarten.

Something made me think that I could make a story out of it, so I created a character.

I'm not sure yet if this is the right character for the story beause it really depends on the direction the story takes.

Around her are some questions I'm asking my self (or her) about her story.

When this begins to grow, I'll post about it. If I say too much now, I think it will spoil the process.

I may need to name her and draw more settings for her to spur my imagination.

My lovely daughter gave me the name for my last children's story, Marmalade's Marvelous Methods.

I have found that giving my main character an identity and then asking her or him interview questions helps to move things along.

Now if the blog fairy would come with some "Powder of Inspiration," I'd be thrilled!

Whimsy

Instead of making it blue or white, I decided to use autumn colors.

My latest painting is completed! I'm so pleased with the work I have done here.

This painting of Abundancia along with several other paintings of fairies and angels will go to the printer to produce notecards for sale.

I plan to leave this series blank inside so that I'll have a broader selection of choices for any purpose.

It's exciting to finish a piece and be ready to display it.

An Update

There are some changes here. Now the color in the background is brighter and the features and details are cleaner. Next I want to rework the frog in the flower pot. He needs to be more distinct and refined (if there's such a thing as a refined frog.) The features on my girls' faces need more definition. It's getting there, sl-ooo-w-ly!

My progress is slow, I know. Some days it's been difficult to find time to paint. Other times, I'm just distracted.

I'm still working on this painting. I hope to complete it soon. As you can see, I have revised the background - twice!!! Some details are still a little rough and more shading is needed in the figures.
I'm going to go back to work on it for a few more minutes until the little guy's bus comes.

Best Friends

This has been a busy few weeks. I keep thinking that things will quiet down soon and I'll be able to concentrate on my painting. Right now, I have to fit it in when I have a few minutes to work.

Here is a painting that needs to be finished. I just love these two sweet girls playing in dress-up clothes. They remind me of my daughter and her oldest best friend. They would play together for hours, pretending, exploring and giggling. It was so much fun to see them together using their wonderful imaginations.

Now that it's up, I have a better feeling of the overall composition. It needs more work, but seeing it helps me use different eyes to assess the piece.

Give me an honest opinion about it. Thank you.

My Newest Work

It has been quite a while since I have posted to this blog. I have been working, painting, and creating since my last post. My work is slow but not tedious. I love it. I started painting in acrylics in January. It's more fun than I ever imagined. There are so many new possiblities to explore and I'm still just beginning to discover them. The images that I have added today will become notecards and prints.

The image at the top is "Summer Song." Because of it's size, the colors are not clear in this scan. It is the first piece that I produced in acrylics. I was a little nervous at first, but the piece took shape quickly. The whole process was amazing.

Next, I sketched and painted the image on the right, "Springtime Gift." I really had trouble with skin tones, but my art instructor helped me adjust the colors I was using. The beauty of the acrylic paints is that I could repaint the face, arms and legs of this fairy and add shading to her.

The image on the left is titled "Flower Fairy." The original painting had a flat background, with encouragement and guidance from my instructor, Virginia Freyermuth, I added texture with brushstrokes of color to the piece.

This is all quite an energizing experience. By expanding into acrylics from watercolor I feel as though a new doorway has opened up in my work. I do think that all three of these pieces need more work, but I'm proud to display them for my friends.

Re-assesing Things

I have taken a little time off from my blog. I'm not ready to return yet because there is a lot of stuff going on. My computer was failing - freezing mostly. It became rather upsetting. I now have a brand new one with lots of capacity. I very excited about this. I' trying to decide which graphic/art software to purchase: Photshop or Corel. Is one better than another? I'm going to try the Corel demo to see how it works.
Wish me luck. Any advice?

AEDM Check In, November 20

Earlier this week I went to the bus stop to wait for my grandson's afternoon bus to arrive. In our part of the world, most of the trees have lost all of their leaves. Up the street from the bus stop, a neighbor has the most colorful trees out in front. When I went home, I sketched the trees so that I could paint it later.
This week has been a little busy, so I knew I would not get to the painting right away. I have just purchased some new "Inkintense Watercolor Pencils" from Michael's. So I decided to give them a try on this piece.

Last night was the Marketplace where I was participating. I brought my Angel cards for sale along with some paintings and prints. There really weren't a lot of customers. But I did get a lot of positive feedback from the other vendors and the owner/director of the Yoga Studio.
Now that the sale is over, I can go back to my art for a bit.

Thanksgiving will be here and all of the "busy-ness" that goes along with family gatherings.
I do plan to find some small stores who might be interested in selling my cards on consignment.

Celebration!

I thought it would be fun and relaxing to do a quick little painting today. I'm going to a "girls only" birthday party for my hubby's Aunt Carol. She's just a couple of years older than he is and they went to high school together. I always thought that was remarkable.
I decided to do a watercolor sketch. I painted a cupcake tree, coffee pot and balloons. It all came out rather spontaneously. Even though we don't have an outdoor party planned, it will be fun to see all of the cousins (female of course) and Aunties in this huge Irish family.

Well, I guess everyone has to have those days.
How about a week?
After a week of work on my latest painting, it's so sad to say that I will not use it.
At first I tried to make a textured background using watercolor. The colors were disappointing and grey looking. I added some salt to create texture but it did not have the effect I wanted.

Next, I decided to paint the illustration without the background and while the painting is progressing, it does not have the fun movement of the other works I had posted earlier in the month.
The illustration looks better online than the actual image. It just looks static

I know that if I were working digitally, I could correct a lot of it painlessly. But with this computer, I don't think that is a possibility.

I'm just going to put both aside for now and revisit them later. I might find another way to use the background and the figures.

Art Every Day Month Day 8

Here is an image of my almost completed picture. There are some finishing touches that I want to add, but most of the work on the figures is completed.
I found a really nice quote from Mother Theresa that I might use inside:
...It is Christmas every time you smile at your brother and offer him your hand
I think it's just perfect for this illustration.
Maybe tomorrow I'll head over to the print shop in Kingston to see what they can do with the whole card idea.
I might make some copies of my newest paintings to sell at the Marketplace at Feathers Wellness Studio.
It's so exciting to finally have something finished enough so that the project can be completed. I can't wait to figure out what's coming next in this series.

Art Every Day Month Day 7

It's been a couple of busy days since I last wrote about my work. Believe me, both days were filled with important stuff. I did get a chance to work on my art cards, although the latest one still isn't finished. I thought I would share a work-in-progress as I plug along.
In keeping with my holiday theme, I wanted these angels to have colorful outfits. Several issues came up as I was working.

~A friend asked: what will I write inside? I had not thought
about the inside yet. I want it to be spiritual and uplifting.

~The details are coming along slowly because I'm using
10X14 inch paper. Faces and fingers are tiny.

~I have to talk to a printing company about reproducing these
as cards(not really a big problem).

~How will I package them for sale?

~ Other computer/internet-related questions.

The process is fun - watching these angel spirits evolve.

Soon, I'll post a finished product! Woo - Hoo!!!

Art Every Day Month Day 4

It's so refreshing to start the day ahead of myself. Does that even make sense? Once again, my time is limited. I was visiting my grandson's classroom to volunteer on Thursday mornings. Now his teacher needs me on Wednesday, instead. I told her I could be flexible because I do have that freedom. Other volunteers are busy moms (been there) who are able to give an hour or two before heading off to work or some other commitment. I decided to do a new sketch for my dancing angels. This one came to me a few days ago. I worked on the idea for a couple of days refining the original and I can't wait to paint it.
I'm trying to use a variety of figures in the work. I'm sure I won't have time until tomorrow, but at least the sketch is done.

Art Every Day Month Day 3

Ocean Angel
I just finished a new painting of a dancing angel. I do have several other sketches started as well. When I spoke to my daughter about this project, she suggested that I try to make the angels ethnically diverse to represent every race. Now, that's a challenge.
I'm still researching this idea, but I did work on this angel. I love her motion. There are some things I struggle with, especially shading.

Art Every Day Month

Leah Piken Kolidas has begun her AEDM challenge for 2009 today. I decided to join the challenge this year and do something creative every day and post it on my blog. I hope this is the big nudge I'll need to post more often. I seem to put that off a bit.
Here are my first creative efforts for the month. I'm going to sell some of my work at a marketplace at Feather's Wellness Studio in Weymouth later in November. Of course, I want to have some new pieces to offer. After a lot of planning and thinking, I have decided to create some new designs to offer as prints and cards.These sketches (very faint, I know) were part of my planning. I want figures moving or dancing. (a lot of joy). Next, I made some of them into angels.The results were pretty good. So, I decided to add color to a couple of them.
I like to work in watercolor and colored pencil. The results are promising; although, I would love more detail. This is going to be a work in progress, so I'll let you know every day.

Magic Wishes

What would I wish for if I had magic powers? I would wish to be more productive in my art and writing. All of my ideas come crowding in at the same time and clamor for attention. I wish I could get them started/completed successfully before the next round of impulses begin to rush in. I'm so glad they come anytime, but they can be demanding.
I can't continue right now because my grandson's bus should be arriving any minute and he'll be looking for a bite to eat.

Connections

Yesterday, I spent the better part of an hour photographing images at my local CSA farm. Sauchuk Farm in Plympton, MA has been a weekly part of our summer this year. Every Friday or Saturday starting in May, we stopped at the farm stand to pick up our share of the harvest. Sometimes we received fruits, veggies and flowers grown locally or right on the farm along with items that had been traded with other farms in New England.
About a week ago, I realized that I had not taken pictures of the farm. (DUH!!) The stand would only be opened until November 1st. How could I let the whole summer pass without recording some of the beauty.

Everyone who works there was friendly and helpful. The customers were a pleasure to meet and share cooking tips with. It was one of the highlights of the week to spend a little time buying produce.

And now I have some beautiful pictures to reference and paint.
On the way home I stopped to photograph a cranberry bog. Even though it was drizzly and rainy, the bog looked lovely. I'll just have to go back later when the sun is shining to capture the fall color on the leaves.

Simplify.

I have done it again! I've updated my template/background. The pink was beginning to bother me, so I simplified the look.
Sometimes, a change is a good thing.

Last week in the TNC Joy Diet, we were inspired to notice joy and begin to do Nothing! Well, let me tell you, I notice joy whenever and wherever I can. When I look out while I'm driving, I try to take joy in the scenery. No matter where I am, I make the practice of looking at that place with my "artist' s eye." It's like a visual caress.
I think, "What does that feel like? What shapes am I seeing? How does that object attract me?
Maybe it's a form of meditation, but the artist in me appreciates
the exercise.

Because of this practice, I actually find beauty in some very unlikely places.
Imagine driving along in the city - the architecture is amazing - even in a battered,
run down neighborhood. I might spot a building with wonderful windows or an amazing doorway.
Somebody planned that beauty.

As a result of this "art trip,"
I am generally always uplifted.
If I feel lonely or down, that goes away
like MAGIC!
I also think that joy creates a sense of well-being and health.
I don't look in the mirror very often.
Why would I bring that up in connection with this subject?
Mainly because my mind's eye sees me differently than I appear.
That might sound delusional, but it works for me.

I have not had time to read the first chapter of the Joy Diet, however I'm sure that I will catch up soon. The subject of "Nothing" is not easy for me to approach. I like to be active. I do enjoy meditation, but I usually practice guided meditation in Yoga. It's refreshing and relaxing.
Otherwise, without direction, I can't stop making mental lists, drawing in my head, planning dinner or a trip to the store, etc, etc.

A lot of this buzzing and busyness comes from years of teaching and self-coaching "on the fly." As a teacher, especially with older children, I had to think on my feet. It probably has a lot to do with my teaching style. I would plan ahead for hours and when I got to the classroom, I would look at the kids and begin to make quick changes in my presentation. Why? just because I would get inspired, or decide that I didn't plan the right presentation. It was exhausting! But so rewarding.

Inspiration

I have so many inspiring thoughts. Many of them are so achievable, if I would just start acting on them.

Recently, at the end of August, a friend came to visit and brought me a lovely pocket charm.
The charm is a seashell crafted in silver metal. Inside the shell is word "Inspire".
Shortly after, Leah of Creative Every Day announced that the September theme is - INSPIRATION!

This was serendipitous.

I love these events. They give me a sense of wonder. How does this happen? Can it be an accident? Is some greater force at work? I know this is an opportune time to take advantage of this valuable situation.

I know one thing, putting these thoughts into words provides substance for my ideas. So I plug along between the everyday business of life to wiggle out ways to follow through. It gives me a sense of purpose.

I have just added a new badge to my blog for Jamie Riddler's Full Moon Dreamboards. For anyone who does not know her, Jamie is a creative coach and blogger who finds wonderful ways to motivate others. She helps others move things along in exciting, enriching ways. There are just not enough words to explain the positive energy that flows from her workshops, online activities and blog.

My painting is on it's way to Virginia. I finished it and delivered it at the end of last week.

Tomorrow night (Tuesday, 8/25/09) I am having a sale of some watercolor paintings. Christine at Feather's Wellness Studio decided to have a marketplace in the studio to raise money for the Jimmy Fund. This is the first time I will offer any of my paintings for sale. Hopefully, people will like them and buy them all.

This is so exciting. I finished this collage painting, finally,

today.

It is to be a wedding gift for one of my former students

who was married a couple of weeks ago.

I really tried several different designs

before this one came to me.

It's a combination of several

ideas that I had.

It seemed to work the best for the shells

that I had painted.

Her Mom told me that they both love

anything to do with the ocean.

So I figured that a tide pool of shells

with a few additions

would work.

I'm going to try a dark colored mat for it

and a simple frame.

Ill take a picture of the completed

composition in a day or two.

I did this little painting the other day.

It took some time, but I enjoyed the effort.

Some time I'll do another one using negative space.

La Tour Eiffel

I just finished this canvas of the Eiffel Tower. This is the first completed collage canvas that I have ever created! It was fun and a little challenging. I wanted to use my own art and drawings in the composition and I can see that there are some adjustments I'll need to make the next time I try this.

I am amazed at how quickly some artists seem to accomplish this style.

This took many hours.

I think it's worth it, though.

Gifts From the Heart

On Saturday morning, Jamie Ridler announced a lovely surprise gift. She and a group of friends had designed a set of 36 affirmation cards to download and print! They were so lovely, that I printed mine immediately. In addition, Amanda and Jenn at Kind Over Matter offered a pattern for a scallop box sized for the cards to fit inside.

The other members of the group include: Rachelle Mee-Chapman or Magpie Girl, Brandi Reynolds at Joy Rebel, Jamie Ridler at Starshyne Productions, and Kind Over Matter.

This liitle act of kindness gave me a lift. I appreciate the generousity of these young women.

I hope that I will find a way to pay them back.

Sunshine Blessings

This painting is a gift that

I created for my niece.

She just had a new baby and I decided produce a painting for her.

I wanted a lullabye, but she said "You Are My Sunshine" is a favorite song of hers.

She described the baby as her Sunshine and joy.

So, I used the words from that song as the inspiration for the picture.

The piece is too large to scan at home, so I took a picture of it.

The result is that it looks angled and the quality is a bit off.

I wanted to post it before I bundle it off to her.

Funfetti Cake at the Beach

On Friday my daughter asked me to help her make a birthday cake for two of her friends. She really wanted moral support and a little advice. I was thrilled to give her the help she needed.

Since the party was going to have a luau theme, she wanted the cake to be decorated to look like a beach. We bought "funfetti" cake mix and baked two layers of sweetness. She then decided she wanted figures of the girls in bikinis with their faces glued on.

I think they came out rather cute. The decorated cake looked great with the figures added to the beach.

Who knows where this will lead. She always has such fun ideas!

What do you wish to nurture?

It's Wishcasting Wednesday and I have been nurturing my hopes and dreams.

My wish is to nurture my art into something new and fruitful. As I cultivate this process of drawing and painting, I keep exploring new avenues to try. There are so many things to learn in creating a personal style. Even though I have reentered this effort after years of hard work in education, my dream is to become accomplished and successful. The challenge is to stay original, not reproducing ideas. There is so much already produced and I am compelled to remain true to my own style.

It's so fascinating where art can take you when you try a new approach. I was reading about Zentangles on Maria Thomas' web page . She is an artist with amazing talent who created this concept. I thought I would try some zentangles on my own. Here are my results...

Pretty interesting, I think.

They may not seem so to the observer, but to me they are amazing.

When I tried at first, I started with the heart and added the star as I reached that point in the design. My second attempt is what I call a fish - rather imaginative isn't it? The flowing lines of each of these made me think of a dress.

Because I'm experimenting, I may add some more details.

I'm not really sure where this will take me, but it's fun to find out.

Well, I did a painting for my header, but...I don't think it's finished enough. Here's a preview:

The border needs some work, and I think the details can be better. I spent as much time on it last night as I could. I went to Yoga and had to go to Staples for my Hubby. Those breaks actually gave me some time to get a fresh look at everything.

It's ok, but not quite what I envisioned. If anyone reads this, please let me know what you think. I can redo it, or use parts of it in a new composition or even a collage.

Right now, I'm going to the store for some groceries. Later, I'll approach it again with fresh eyes.

For now, I have placed one of my favorite photos from last summer in the header.

Originally, I had created this picture for Illustration Friday last week. Even though I'm a little behind or late, I decided to post it. It was interesting to think of a way to show how someone might anticipate the need to adapt if their bubble burst.
Life could become interesting for a while. The two characters from two different worlds might become friends and form an alliance. On the other hand, they might resent one another until they found common ground.

There might be a story worth exploring here.

I'll be away for the next week. My daughter and I are taking my Mom to Florida to visit family there. Access to the computer will be limited for us, since I don't have a laptop. My daughter has one and I've asked her to bring it so that we can register for our flight home. She uses it for work and she really doen't want to think about work while we're away.
I'm not sure when I'll even check email. So, things will be simple for a week.

Fairie Queen

Today I have spent most of my spare time creating this image. (After cleaning 2 bathrooms and vaccuuming the floors in my house. It still needs work, but I just wanted to post this version. I have been studying the artwork of Trina Schart Hyman. She did some amazing art for children's picture books during her career. I love the amount of detail that she brings to each of her subjects.
This may need more color, I haven't decided yet. Her proportions may be off a bit too.

When we come back from our trip to New Mexico, I may try something different either using her or another image.

Here is my latest sketch of Marmalade. I finished this picture in my last art class on Tuesday. I cannot get over how different she is from my first efforts earlier this year. I'll just keep working at improving my art. It's such a great journey, full of surprises. I have another illustration (below) ready with more color.

This is a painting of my otter. I drew this from another source. I really wished I had used my dream image, but this is how I painted him/her.

As I mentioned, in my dream the otter was in a container. It was also much darker and very wet.

But I was excited to post an image of my dream to correspond with the last post. Maybe I'll be able to do another painting later after I get back from Boston today.

Dreams

Creative Every Day blog has provided a dream theme for March. In choosing to follow this blog, I really concentrated on remembering my dreams. Sometimes, all right most times, I forget my dreams. Suddenly, one morning, I had an unusual dream. I had found a container of water in a room. The room was cluttered with many objects. When I lifted the container, inside I saw what I thought was a large snake. It appeared to be dead. As I observed it for a few moments, it began to move. It was not a snake at all, but rather a furry creature. Itr lifted it's head and looked at me. Then it began to look around the room. A pet of mine in the room began to whimper. After a bit, the creature turned into a dark-haired boy. Later in the day, I mulled over the dream. I wanted to remember every detail in it. While I was looking at a picture book of mamals, I found a picture of a river otter. The head and body of the otter really reminded me of my dream creature.

A good friend of mine listened to my story. She explained that what I thought was dead, maybe a fear or hidden thought, was really sleeping and was now awakening. She found a reference in a book about animal totems, Animal Speaks, and sent me the info in an email.

Otters awaken curiosity. They remind us that everything is interesting if we look at it from the right angle. They are playful and seem to have fun at what they are doing. Otters always have their homes close to the water. They usually have a large home territory around and in the water, and they usually mark their homes with a scent. Otters remind us to keep the inner child alive or to give birth to it. They remind us that life can be fun if we approach it with the right attitude. Otters are seldom seen alone. The adult otter has practically no natural enemies. They protect their young very well. They are agile and fast in the water, with the ability to out swim fish. Sometimes otters show up to help awaken the primal mothering energies and responsibilities. It can indicate a need to set up your boundaries within the home and define your feminine role.
If otter has surfaced in your life, it may be time to find some play time. Involve yourself in some creative activity. Do you need to awaken your inner child. Treat yourself to something special.

This has really intrigued and excited me. In many ways, the otter seems to reflect me and my thoughts, feelings and actions. I created a sketch and a watercolor painting of an otter.

Secret # 6 Conquering Saboteurs

When I think of a saboteur, the word brings to mind several meanings. To sabotage work is to interrupt it or damage it in some way. A saboteur disrupts or harms work and efforts. At first I thought of all of the inner critics we all have as we create art, writing, music, dance, any attempt at expression. But, I have come to the conclusion that an even greater saboteur is time. Time is so valuable and yet, it can be absorbed so easily.

Today, instead of working on my illustrations for my picture book, I decided to create an image of how time pulls in many directions. When I tried to upload it to this post, blogger was unable to complete the task. Now, this is not a work of art. It is a cartoon of sorts but it is giving me grief! My time is so valuable to me and I resent the fact that I can't put my illustration on. I will try again, right now.

MAGIC

I believe in magic. Not just the ordinary sleight of hand, but the kind of magic that emerges when my energy is moved. The first time I realized that I could create magic was a few years ago in my classroom. I found that the kids were wrapped up in our collective magic. They never wanted to leave (for the most part). This was powerful to me and I have reflected on it every chance I get.

This magic flows for me whenever I work. The flow grows and expands as I move my energy in creative persuits. Since I have been developing my art, my energy is expanding. When an element is added, magic grows. In many ways, it's like cultivating a garden. The magic of bright orange coupled with purple infuses energy into this photo.

Energy emerges permeating the composition with color. I can equate the art that I'm producing to this color composition. When I observe these combinations, I feel a sense of wonder and beauty. There is so much joy in these colors.
If this post is off topic, I am sorry. This is where my insight brought me.
I have been working on a picture book submission. I applied for a grant and now I'm researching publishers for my story and illustrations. These are some goals that I have for my art. With sheer effort and a little MAGIC, I'll move ahead.

My Muse Is Missing

I have chosen to use this title because I am so frustrated right now. I'm not sure whether it's the time of year, and she's just sleeping for a while, or if the problem is that I have a block and I'm not hearing her clearly.

For quite a bit of time, I have been searching for answers, doing a variety of activities to open up my charkra (Nia dance, Yoga, Vision Boards, Meditation, Art Classes, Photography, Reading, Sewing, etc.) just to name a few of them. In spite of my whole-hearted participation, my Muse remains secluded.

A friend recently told me to pay attention to my dreams and keep a dream journal. Last night, I think one of my dreams was about collecting bugs. Some people were creating art in the background, while I was collecting a variety of bugs. This will be a record of that particular dream...Hmmm.

This morning, I received the news that a member of my family needs financial assitance. I want so much to be able to help, but I need to find a way without impacting my family's budget. It seems that everything is so fragile these days. I would love to have a product that I can devote to help out. Sometimes, I hear those talk shows that reference the spirit of generousity and giving and how these things enrich you in numerous ways. It all sounds so wonderful, but where does one find the resources? Everything I think of for a product whether it's art, or services the idea is being explored in some way, or it requires certification. I want to think of something practical so buyers will want to purchase one or some of it. Especially given that the economy is so depressed.

Where is my Muse in all of this? I'm posting this on my blog and sending it out to the universe in the hope that she will come and help me out with some inspiration.

Comfort Doll Project

This sounds like such a nice idea, that I thought I would include a link to it so that I can explore it further. I love the thought of providing battered women with a work of art. Buffalo Update

I have finished Casey's buffalo. I added grass and stitched around the edges. My son wants to hang it up, so I may add a dowel pocket in the back.

After dinner last night, I gave it to him so he could have it today when he went into Boston. He seemed very happy about receiving it.

I wish I had taken his picture with it. :)

I added some more of my favorite blogs to the list on my page. I have so many favorites now, that I should put them all on here so I can look them up easily.

Buffalo Stage 2

Here I have appliqued the main parts of the buffalo. I plan to sew him (Yes, it's a male) onto cream colored fleece. I embroidered a smile for his mouth, but it's barely visible. I also switched his beard to the same fleece as his fur.

Next Wednesday (12/17), Casey is having his tonsils and adinoids removed. I want the buffalo ready to give him on the night before his surgery. I'll ask him if he wants it to be a rug or a blanket. Maybe I should just finish it as a blanket.

Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Let me know, okay?

My Grandson has a fondness for buffalo. He saw some at the zoo earlier this fall. My oldest son has been laying wood floors throughout his house. When Casey showed me his beautiful floor in his bedroom, I lold him he cold have a rug by his bed to stand on when he gets up. He asked if it could be a buffalo. Hmm, that made me think about creating a rug for him. This picture shows my version of a buffalo cut from fleece. All of the pieces are pinned and ready to be sewn.

New Discoveries

Hi, I'm back from my cruise. It was an amazing adventure. We traveled on the Disney Magic - and a magnificent journey! I'll have to post some pictures soon.
But now we're back to reality and getting ready for Thanksgiving with family.

Sunday Serenade

Music is such a soothing way to help me relax and create.

I'm off to see Mom today. She needs help finding oil for her industrial sewing machine. I have some wooden doll heads for her. She likes to make dolls with button arms and legs to give for gifts. She'll be 86 this December, and we worry about her driving. So I'll take her to lunch and shopping, if needed. I figure it's the least I can do for her.

Back to the music. I get to listen to my favorite tunes and artists on the way up and back!

Random Thoughts

Lately, it seems that I have been on a quixotic journey. Every so often, I find myself traveling along divergent paths. Even though I love my painting and drawing, I have been exploring fiber arts and designs.
As a child, I watched my mother sew beautiful clothing and accessories for our family. A very early memory is one of my felt blotter that Mom constructed out of wool circles for me to use with my ink pen at school. Yes, I actually had an inkwell and a pen with a nub.
At St. Catherine's School in Norwood, we practiced penmanship every day at our desks. The desks and chairs were bolted to the floor in the classroom. I must have been in third or fifth grade. I know it wasn't fouth grade, for sure. In fourth grade, I was in Sister Prudence's room at the corner of the hall on the first floor. The room where I remember using the wool blotter was the second one on the right side of the hall.
Why do I want to write about the blotter? Because I loved the look and feel of it. I liked the idea that my mother made it for me and I could carry it with me in school. It gave me confidence and security to have that little pile of wool circles stiched together.
Much later, when I went to college, I had trendy little wool coats that my Mom made for me. I think those wool coats were comforting as I traveled to and from class, or over to the Admin. Building where I worked in the Education Office several hours a week.
It's certainly fun to go back and mull over things remembered from the past. Over the years, my mother patiently taught me to sew. When something became confusing, she would help me work out the snaggles and puckers. I spent many happy days shopping for fabric to construct some amazing (I thought) outfit. There was a fabric store in the center of town. Martins Fabrics was located in the middle of a block of stores in Guild Square in Norwood. They had a wonderful variety of fabrics and notions.
That's it for now. As you can see, I have been drifting around. I'm hoping that by exploring other diversions (check out my blog list), I'll bring fresh eyes to my art.

Lighthouse on the Maine Coast

While I did use an actual photograph of the Nubble Lighthouse in Maine to compose this illustration, I decided to improvise a bit with the style and details of the setting. My Niece wanted a painting for her dorm room. I decided to give her both this painting and the one of the stone railroad bridge (below). I photographed this one while it was in progress, but there were very few details left to complete. Both paintings were great fun to compose. Getting them up on my blog has taken longer than I'd like.

I keep hoping I'll get better at uploading my work and publishing to my blog.

This illustration is done in watercolor and colored pencil of the stone bridge on Dean St. in Norwood. I was pleased with the way that it came out. Rather than pay a lot of money to have it scanned, I photographed the original using my Pentax *istDL SLR Digital Camera. This camera is a marvel! It is an amazing tool.

This is my first post for Monday Artday. The challenge was to create an illustration for a children's book. During a Picture Writing workshop in New Hampshire a few years ago, I created a story about how this dragon found her way into the world. It was such a fun workshop. As the racing sailboats appeared on the horizon, Abby spotted her brother's spinnaker. She excitedly called over to her friends that Joel was in the lead and headed for the finish line. This was his moment of victory and she was so pleased for him.

Here's another picture for last week. I have drawn a lobster dancing backwards. I wish I had thought of it before I did the plain one. I find these challenges fun to try. I'm hoping my skills improve as I work on each trial.

Lobsters crawl backwards to move. Once they enter a lobster trap, there is no escape for them. A blue lobster is rarely caught.
